I'll grant you she should have to complete her time in jail. BUT you mean to tell me that the police in Detroit having nothing else to do (no dope dealers, killers or rapists) to chase down? So they track down a big time shoplifter from 37 years ago! I bet the court system in Michigan has turned loose more killers & dope dealers in the past 37 years than there are days in that 37 years. But keep a lookout for a shoplifter. More

The cops should be embarrassed by this story, but instead they are proud they caught a women after 37 years. It appears the women was a law abiding citizen for the past 37 years and her original crime was not one of violence. I stole some bubble gum 25 years ago and my dad gave me the belt. I learned my lesson and never did anything like that again. Now I have to worry about the cops looking for me, because they can't catch real criminals. More

This is a complete JOKE and just another example of why our law enforcement system is so screwed up! G-d only knows how many man-hours and resources these law enforcement agencies utilized to capture a shoplifter who escaped 37 years go and only had maybe 12 months left to serve? With all of the 1000's of unsolved murders and escaped felons, very serious bad people, that are roaming our streets and this is what we spend our tax dollars on for law enforcement to waste their time? Undoubtedly, many more hours and our tax dollars will be spent on an awards ceremony, travel and all sorts of stuff associated with this to honor ALL the people it took to capture this "dangerous" shoplifter and send her back to Michigan to do her 12 months!
I wonder what the families of lost loved ones who have never had their cases closed, think when they see this story? How sad is that? And every peace officer who reads this will find a way to try and justify the efforts of these fine officers. LOL. More

Wow, considering that now you can get a suspended sentence and probation for some pretty major crimes, 1 1/2 years for attempted theft seems like a lot, but maybe she had a prior record. Escaping to avoid such a minimal sentence and then living on the lam for almost four decades and having to look over your shoulder the entire time seems like really bad judgement on her part.
There's got to be a lot more to the story, like who provided the tip and why. More

This is absolutely ridiculous - to waste taxpayer money on a crime that involved stealing some clothes 37years ago is simply ridiculous!!! This woman appears to have not committed a crime for 37 years, is now elderly, and kept mostly to herself - not causing any problems! Doesn't San Diego and Michigan police have something better to do - like solve murders. When I read articles like this, I can only wonder what is the judicial system coming to! What a waste of time, money, and resources! Everybody involved in this women's capture and extradiction should be ashamed!!! More

And now they want to drag her back to finish out the sentence?? All that time and money wasted. Does the MI police have no other more pressing crimes to investigate than this?? Go after the murderers, the child abusers, heck, go after the politicians and celebrities whose money gets them off scot-free no matter what crimes they commit. What some people call "tenacity" is what others might call a complete waste of time and resources. I'm not saying she shouldn't serve her time, but 37 years of time to catch a clothing thief and we can't even find the police and agency resources to shut down multi-million dollar drug rings and gangs of hard core criminals?
Plus, doesn't breaking out of prison warrant some sort of extension to an original minimum sentence? If that's the case, why wouldn't criminal's make daily attempts to break out if their penalty does not become more severe if caught. More

and the article still doesn't mention what gave her away...? it just says she was found living under an alias in San Diego- and once the police showed up, they matched her eyes with the pic... so, what led the police to the door in the first place??? Because I don't believe any law enforcement personnel was actively searching for a person who stole clothes almost 40 years later... this silly article is missing info. More
